Granted it is only my <br />impression... but how many other readers are feeling the same <br />vibes?? Could be that if you came in with a little humility and <br />stated your position with more finesse you would gather more <br />support for your views... I can’t help but take into consideration all of <br />the other Companies that sell their products too. They (I know <br />for a fact) take all of these expenses into account and charge for <br />their product accordingly... <br /> <br />I just bought a new Sony TV last weekend and their offer <br />included a ‘free calculator’ to advertise their TV... Now the <br />way I see it, the cost of the calculators cost Sony Xnumber of <br />dollars to give them away... This is an advertising expense and <br />is handled as a tax write off on the income statement. <br /> <br />The way I see it, Stardock asks for skinners to create free skins, <br />at their own costs, to sell the products at no cost to the <br />company. When customers buy the SD products they naturally <br />will look for the advertised free skins... This as I see it is the <br />bulk usage of WC bandwidth. The smaller sites have no <br />products to sell and are compelled to pay their own costs... <br />Now when you talk about sites being more commercialized, I <br />can see that in the bigger sites but not in the smaller ones... The <br />smaller sites will continue in their world of ‘freeware’ skins and <br />let the bigger sites pay their own expenses... This I’m sure is the <br />biggest problem that Devart is facing today. They do not sell <br />any software but host many catagories for free skins for the <br />programmers that are making the money and get ‘what’ in <br />return...

Hobnobber: That is indeed one of the problems deviantART faces that WinCustomize does not -- WinCustomize is subsidized by Stardock. <br /> <br />Stardock looks at WinCustomize&acute;s various stats and says, &quot;Okay, WinCustomize is worth X per month in expenses because it drives Y sales to us.&quot; <br /> <br />When the actual expenses grow beyond X then the site has to find other ways to pay for itself. <br /> <br />deivnaRT, on the other hand, doesn&acute;t have that benefit. It has to fund itself on its own and its bandwidth costs are even higher than WinCustomize because of all the photography and other high bandwidth content they have there. <br /> <br />They have been selling deviantPrints which is probably offsetting the costs by some considerable amount. What&acute;s left over has to be squeezed out of those using the most bandwidth. <br /> <br />I&acute;ve always been in favor of systems that target those who use the most bandwidth rather than trying to get everyone. I.e. either get the heavy bandwidth users to contribute or get them to go away. <br /> <br />I don&acute;t remember the stat off hand but I recall that something like 1% of the users on WinCustomize use something like 25% of the bandwidth and of that 1% only a small percentage of them were customers of Stardock. This was before the bandwidth caps and such. But WC&acute;s strategy was to target that 1% rather than trying to get every last person to pay.

Ah....I was away at the Historic Motorbike races [my other volunteer thingie] over the weekend so missed the latest episodes... <br />It&acute;s important in what &acute;we&acute; like to refer to as &acute;the skinning community&acute; to go out of our way to uphold and respect the &acute;member&acute; sites who make up this &acute;community&acute;. <br />It matters not what their politics/failings/economic models might be, they are what makes up the global world of &acute;skinning&acute; and should be respected with or in spite of perceived &acute;failings&acute;. <br />Call it mature, call it diplomatic, but generally it&acute;s something the various sites&acute; admins, etc need no reminding of....generally they&acute;ve been in the &acute;game&acute; long enough to be aware of the reality. <br /> <br />The responsibility is theirs to ensure the message is communicated, hence Snow&acute;s intervention. <br /> <br />[gotta use my icon again].... :jafo
