Skinbase slowing down...

First of all : There are no huge files at Skinbase (at least not that I know of), and most people come here to download skins & walls, and there are few files larger than 1Mb. If the reason why SB has slowed down is that 205 users are downloading at once, you better not make any more improvements to SB, and what are the odds for everyone downloading several files at once? The DL numbers seem to say otherwise, even for the most popular DLs. <br /> <br />The ads are slowing this a little bit, but not in this case, because sometimes they are all I can see. <br /> <br />General bad &quot;internet weather&quot; (lotsa traffic)... well, there&acute;s gotta be a lot of local bad weather, since the problem isn&acute;t the net in general, but SB. I wouldn&acute;t have asked the question in the first place if browsing in general was slow. That Q. would have been directed to my ISP. <br /> <br />Thanks for the answer anyway. Let&acute;s give it a few days...

hmz .. i see a lot of stuff turned into green links since my last visit here .. could it be that sponsored linking is responsible for slowing down the site ?

They may be <b>one</b> of the reasons - annoying as they may be they still help pay the bills :)

I&acute;ve gotta agree with Yrgal. The last couple of days connecting to the site has been unbelievably slow ~ once I even thought my machine had frozen on me :grave <br />I&acute;m using ADSL at 576 kbps with unlimited download and most sites appear like 5hi7 off a shovel, but not skinbase :sad:

I can tell now that the speed of entering the site and the browsing too is about 50% faster than it was before. And I am on telephone line so...good work :-) Actually, now that my wincusto subscription has ended and I am put on low bandwith there, this site is faster....

Like Nikos said in the poll comments : It has 2 big delays (half to 2 minutes) before anything happen, then everything is fast! That might be useful information for you, gRAVE, so I&acute;m posting it here in case you didn&acute;t read it. ;)

OK, here&acute;s the deal. I just downloaded Nikos&acute; latest addition to the bootskins library and left a comment. That enormous amount of work took me seven -7- minutes! Hey, I love Skinbase, but I havn&acute;t got that much hair left, and time makes it grey in here... :(

ok folks: <br />We just had an additional drive installed, so now we have three drives - <br />one for the web stuff <br />one for the logs <br />and one for the system files <br /> <br />This *should* speed up the site a bit - hopefully. <br /> <br />Other tweaks will be done in the next couple of days in order to gain some more speed. <br /> <br />Thanks to all for sticking by even though the site was a bit slow <br />:)

Maybe it&acute;d load up quicker if you&acute;d only remove all the bomberman screenshots that have ruined the games section under wallpapers. It might help if someone was to remove this stuff.

gRAVE and me did some serious speed/stabillity testings yesterday. <br />The speeds we&acute;re seeing now, seems to be the best we can manage - <b>at the moment</b>. <br />Things will improve though <br /> <br />The main reasons for Skinbase not loading at optimum speed <u>seems</u> to be the rest of the sites hosted on this server also demanding some BW. As soon as the other sites were &quot;turned off&quot; Skinbase loaded at lightning speed!! <br />The &quot;Latest Uploads&quot; page (with 50 skins per page) loaded for me, from click to full load in less than ½ sec! <br />It would be nice to keep that speed, but we cannot sacrifice all the other sites just to speed up one single site. <br /> <br />We will be monitoring the stabillity of the speed the next few days, and gRAVE will when or <b>IF</b> he gets time do some tweaking here and there. <br /> <br />One thing we all can do to speed up the loading time, is to turn <b>off</b> as many &acute;frontpage stats&acute; as possible. This can be done on this page http://www.skinbase.org/user.php?action=editprofile - the less mySQL calls we use, the faster everything will be. Ye i can already feel the diffrence most of the time. <br />But once in a while i still have a bit of a slow patch.

And off course...... as soon as gRAVE orders a <b>buttload of new hardware</b>, the site starts behaveing..... <br /> <br />&quot;2x intel XEON 2.8 CPU, 2gb ram, motherboard and rackmount case for the server&quot; <br /> <br />That is what is being added! If that aint enough and doesnt improve the sitespeed even more, we&acute;re screwed! ;)
