what are the teams goals, and what do they request of applicants in regards to qualifications ;)

Goal : To promote Skinbase and bring attention to the work of the talented members here. If we win one of the prizes announced, that´s fine too!

Qualifications : Proficiency in the creation of original Wallpapers, icons for IconPackager or Windowblinds desktop themes. The way I understand the contest rules, existing work, copies, reproductions or work other than that someone created themselves will not be accepted. New, original work only.... :-)

That´s my perception anyway...if the other members have a different viewpoint, feel free to share it with the rest of us... :-)

What makes me laugh Rick is the only one that has got through is one of two low skill walls and yet the two high end ones have not shown nor the second low end one. I have not been informed they have not been accepted either so who knows. Getting into the site has been hard enough for me and their links are god awful...errors everywhere from my experience. I participated to help promote SkinBase and never thought that I would get anywhere....nor does it matter to me....I know what WinCustomize is all about so yeah.....I agree with all you say. Don´t worry about it Tommy.......they accepted two walls from someone who simply clicked the Panopticum Ice Filter on a black background twice........must need to do a three year course to do that with skilll ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐

Just been to have another look and I entirely agree with what Tommy and Rick have said about WinCustomize......I am not being egotistical but the three they disallowed or that have not come to view yet of mine are of a better standard than a lot of what is up there. I guess I knew it would be like this....the same old faces are cropping up there. At least here we have adventurous artists and not safe, conservative ones that all look like clones. We are a great bunch of innovative and unique artists here and we are not frightened to go beyond the norm. They seem frightened to put anything up that is different and anything that might demoralize their little glee club. I think it is a damned shame that none of Tommy´s got through...he is one of the hardest workers here and his art has improved tremendously in the time I have had the privilege to watch him. There is nothing wrong with his work today at all and is on a par with some of the best. To ignore his talent as they have speaks volumes. We shall just enjoy his work as much as we did before and it is their loss. Well done team. As the Scots would say " Here´s tae us haes like us and damn the yin!"....in other words...Here´s to us who are like us and damn the rest! :congrats ๐ ;)

๐ฎ finally our windowblind and get released Mr Navigatsio´s and mine..strange tho..both of our skin somehow get squeeze in under someone else skin..which mean...ours took longer to get approved compared to the other one? .. hmmm... I wonder....anyway...good luck to us all...... :D

Good luck to the approved works of the SkinBase Team at GUI Chumps. :congrats :aw

For the works didn´t approved, no problem, we will enjoy them, after some time, when you send them here at SB. The prize for those works will be the appreciation of the Skinbase people! Who needs more? ;)

๐ :aw YUM YUM you are sure right, Nikos! I wasnt watching there exact order but if the really apply skins and start up with them like icons, wbs, logons, evaluating could take MUCH longer than a later released mere image.

Inside staff masks for example if only 1 file unzipped appears, or a small zip checkable with object zip you can first scan for malware. Which new uploader even thinks that could matter. Of course well known artists cause a different type of work. Then you want to live in the suite a bit before saying anything wrong. Including many subfeatures and seeing what icon could be missing or which save file animation looks less or more like this and that... Some Wb skins dont support my additional buttons from external programs etc. With people you dont know yet its more like - does it work it all? Is a permit included? Did this one really make it all himself. In big coops its even more checking sometimes.

Seems more effective to stack sections and then do a whole separate block sometimes, like all sysmetrixes from one week. Our users would kill me if I did it that way before approving. So some are instead pulled off retroactively or get no comment from me which is worse. A matter of time and feeling but never perfect.

The team effect in a staff helps, but language and time shifts pour a different kind of molasses on the process. When people from other sites come together, you might be able to first approve whom you know you can trust with less checking.

And this is all system immanent without any personal things involved. Good thing I get to see it from several ends these days. In some cases team might wait for a certain helper to be available for speaking a lingo or being able to test something specific better...

I wonder when the contest started because of my voting problem as a visitor. Maybe just a harmless slipup of mine or cookies in different browsers and pcs contradicting each other from some prior event. No biggie.

My sentiments exactly Nikos! ๐ ........ and to some degree I agree with you Toby....however my feeling is....and it is a gut feeling I have learnt to trust from years of experience......we got screwed. If people are going to run a competition and this one has run for a number of years now, they would know to some degree the popularity of it and make staff available and processes available to cater for the influx of work. I purposely put two low end works in to see what would happen. I am a suspicious old dog. As I thought, the worst of the bunch was accepted. Now that set alarm bells off. As I said further up the thread they accept work that is simply a Panopticum ice filter on a black background clicked once, they accept work that is just a spatter effect in photoshop, yet work like the standard of Mary´d, Tommy´s and mine that has taken time to create and is of a competitive standard they disapprove. They are not even good con artists. It is obvious. I make no excuses for them at all. It is clearly a biased competition. Apart from what I have already said, navigating the site, the amount of errors when clicking links, all adds up to them not being up to scratch. WinCustomize is the front door for StarDock Applications. Not a very good advertisement for them. As Nikos said....the best reward is posting the art here for the people who do appreciate our work. We just need to add this to the experience belt. Everyone in the Skinbase Team is of quality and we did do a great effort and I was and am proud to be associated with that team. :congrats ๐ ;)

๐ฎ Interesting! Sounds like quite an experiment of yours, Iain. Do they think you are a beginner to encourage and or just like your like your one you call less advanced? If they are all bad over there, why take part? I should look into their system or ask them when I get around to it.

Not long ago understandably over HERE advanced artists were tired of photoskins - btw takes a while to PRACTICALLY get that across to new and old members inactive a while - and now you and Nikos do a thing I also like very much trying to be equally fair + supportive to ALL including new submitters. But in opposite to theory, practical decisions on these things can almost contradict each other. Right now its a bit transitional here. Maybe over there a different way... I wonder about their starting + end deadlines but artists involved should be able to find out by direct contact or in some general FAQs I would hope.. โ

We already had an Xmas, a winter, valentines and Easter contest of our own here in less than 365 days so I think its ๐ to see how it works elsewhere. Likewise, many nice WC artists etc read about Nikosยดs thread on our things over at WC and came over, at least additionally, with some things. A big and challenging project - the interaction from these sites LOL

I love High School football...
but everyone knows the home team has a home field advantage. But then there are times the last place team surprises everyone by beating the champs and everyone cheers...even the home team fans! Then there´s always a few who will be displeased with whoever wins. Just an analogy but I think it applies to contests too... :-)

I don´t know, Iain, I´ll stay optimistic about the whole thing. I wouldn´t even want to be in their shoes on the other end of recieving, reviewing and approving (or not) no telling how many different entries. Whew, that´s gotta be a nightmare! I still feel like we´ve accomplished something worthy though...we´ve represented SkinBase as a team and that´s where my motivation was in the first place...and still is, my friend... :-)

I agree with you Rick......I do know that like devART, WinCustomize has its little cliques and it is also known for being picky about who uploads and what is uploaded. It has always been like that and I accept that. I don´t agree with what they do. If they decide to run a competition then it is prudent to ensure enough people are on hand to cope with all contingencies. Planning ensures that the bottlenecks get smoothed out. Also I do wonder who actually vets the work and what credentials or experience they have. I mean as I said earlier, there is no skill in clicking on a filter twice and taking what comes out and then upload it and it is accepted. Surely these guys can tell the difference between credible work and just plane crap. They do themselves a disservice by allowing it in a competition. Then when people like Tommy and Mary both get significant work barred from entry it is a slap in the face. Sure I participated with no thought of winning. It was in keeping with a team spirit. That is why I did it just like you. I simply smell a rat and I don´t like seeing good people getting their work knocked back that is good work. The process and conduct over there is questionable to say the least. :congrats ๐ :Happy

1 thing it says when I try NORMAL uploading is rough but fair to warn you about: What you submit is ours, basically- period. We can sell it, and you cant pull it off a CD ROM afterwards or wherever we like to put it.

With such an amount each time someone pulls off a copyright the whole system would get a problem. Selling will always be controversial of course. Some just make a name, boost the site, and then advance to own sales or boosting other free sites plus their own free site.

๐ that you see folks from other sites, mutally, though, no matter where. Otherwise how would I ever have found the places I like? Meaning occasional sacrifices I guess. Currently learning the importance of independent backups but thats only an additional platform because who cares if no one comes to your cave?

Boosting your cave - an art of its own but some places already exist. So its more like where to do what. The good thing bout big sites is learning mistakes and HOW they select, another endless issue. I am sure Iain will do what s best for him.

I ranted a lot on many sites when new or if they were meant for that. But when you gradually get closer to the situation they might be in, instead harmless contact including waiting, reiterating attempts or trying different contact channels give me more. Example zoomba is a member here providing us with news that is not spam but interesting if you are a user of certain apps. Maybe his crew could answer a question or 2.

Some of this question might be serious - hey Iain, with your knowledge you might even host a lil Sb or private competition of your own on some time limited pages? You never know, but I think thats where it gets interesting, SOLVING something :magic

Congrats to Basj for his icon package...fantasic work, my friend! :-)

I´ll tell ya´ what, I´ve downloaded, used and picked apart about every skin in the contest and the caliber of work I´ve found amazes me! I´m in awe of all this talent...wish some of it would rub off on me. I don´t use iconpackager but I installed it just to get a look at the packages in action and I think it´ll stay installed. :-) Now if folks will vote with their eye instead of name recognition, affiliation, administration, etc. this whole thing will prove very interesting indeed! :-)

Oh yeah, I made another blind and submitted it last night...just for the heck of it! It´s the same color/pattern (green/lime checks) as my user icon trimmed in purple and red...heehee...and it´s called The Joker. :-)

Yes Toby you are right. And yes I am problem solving. And yes I have taken them to task on why so many of our wallpapers were disallowed. And frankly their explanation does not stack up and basically they are full of bull. I know the quality of peoples work here and that quality would not have dropped mysteriously just because it was WinCustomize. I have looked at the wallpaper submissions that have been accepted and now they are saying that quality is subjective and when I pointed out how some submissions were made and that the time spent did not reflect quality nor appearance I got the subjective line. In other words we got shafted. :congrats ๐ ;) .....they even said that it is so hard to determine now that next year wallpapers will not be included in the competition. That is just a cop out for their nefarious handling of the situation.

First off congratulations basj on your awesome icon set ! As I said prior, awesome work..

Mountain Hawk my friend I agree with you . But, wallpaper at Wincustomized has always been very very hard to get approved. Competetion or not. I believe the approval is done by taste of the moderator at the time. But you know, we cant let that get us down. Damn, I had a windowblind refused last week or so and I am not gonna let it get me down. I am making another and either they will accept it or refuse it. The way I look at it is this : If I am happy with what I have made then their approval or disapproval is completely irrelevant to me. For sure I am happy someobody say they like it and it get approved, but first and foremost its my satisifaction that ultimately matters... :Happy

I agree Butch with what you say and I am not letting it get me down. I just felt that given we had so many walls knocked back it was warranted and needed to be addressed and for them to be confronted. The answer I got was a complete cop out on their part so I am happy to leave it at that. I do my art to please me and if anyone else gets enjoyment out of it then that is a bonus. Plus I have made enough money from the Sign and Display Industry over the years to know that what I do works and sells. :congrats ๐ ;)

Is anyone still working on a blind or interested in entering a blind they may be working on before the cut-off?
I don´t think there´s a restriction from anyone joining the team throughout the competition so if there´s a "ringer" out there, please consider throwing your hat (or blind :-) ) in the ring. It would benefit Skinbase by promoting the site (and there´s not that many sites left devoted to desktop customization) and you´ll get exposure to your art/talent you may not otherwise get. I believe it´s called a win/win situation! :-)
I started a new one the other day but with everything that´s involved in creating a complete blind...I don´t think I can make it. So if anyone has one almost ready for release, please consider a Team Skinbase entry! :-)

Hi all.....I was wondering.. is it possible to update our entries at the GUI Championships? .. I was thinking to include some substiles on my w/blind entry.... And How to produce a big wallpaper such as those 1600x1200px while I can only max my display to 1280x1024px. Will just the normal resampling up from the 1280x1024size be enuff?

Thanks...

Hi Basj,
Yep, there´s an update option to upload an updated version of your blind underneath the preview. I updated Pacifica with some new fixes/features just yesterday. I believe voting on most usable blind begins the 16th so as long as you get it in pretty quick, I believe you´ll be okay... :-)

Chronologically, making it a different feeling and feat, seems SB was one of the first entitled and kind enough to be like startup pioneers, now it just seems so big statistically almost no one could win. However its quite a reference to be there and I wonder what its like having to select from a LARGER amount than what is visible there now. Before I even found all SB favorite artists I was looking for I ran across other people I knew or just found unexpected other things.

Even being just a user, not checking malware much or permissions, I spent four hours browsing, adjusting, converting icon sets, putting things in folders like walls, seeing which size was nice, trying the subflavors of each skin, some stuff in startup phase etc.

Then offline another 2 hrs. just enjoying and sorting the things I liked most for private use. What a BIG project. In fact, next times in our OWN contests I really hope we have more prizes. But again, mentioning more who came next closest and even being accepted, displayed nicely and free, it all can be for something good.

When starting uploading attempts anywhere I was amazed how much you invest to GIVE something free. Or find time + tricks for improvising (net connection, hardware, software). What I am learning though is not relying on all work and successes to last forever and give returns if solely shared or secured to one place under certain conditions.

Meaning I still like this place best right now, but you can back up on own sites and if I was to go professional like some could go with their experiences + references, no matter, photography, art, whatever, software you develop, site designs, best would be to offer SOME free for many reasons but if you share ALL or to much for free - as a professional - under wrong terms - whats left over to survive on?

Luckily, EVERYTHING goes around here to a certain extent so its everyones own decision or taste. And so much for some expectations but a nice and good platform, from many viewpoints.

Instead of words you should enter hundreds of homes with a webcam and see happy TAXIFUNK or someone on another continent in a pyjama munching potato chips and adjusting file savings dialogs animations of a new wb skin to other tools blinking and moving and emitting sounds so the neat new skin feature lands in right part between other freaky windows or whatever. You are making many happy and keeping em from darker sides of life ๐ โค๏ธ
