OP
wooo hoooo....I hate stardock tooo....but what does frogboy have to do with anything? I agree with the microsoft theory only I´d pay for microsoft because because I use it everyday, Unlike windowblinds....which I use only to test my skin designs....so that I can "share" them with others....I noticed that they try to sell each and every aspect of their software... and in doing so they take all the fun outta skinning for me....I downloaded most of the downloadable software to try them out but quicly uninstalled them because the nag screens got old, fast.....I even hate using skin studio because of the nag screens....it´s just a crappy way of tell me I´d have to pay to use their dammm blinds...and than pay to skin their damm blinds...but I have yet to find an alternative....bugzOut

"It depends on how you define freeware. I saw a guy once claim that Stardock makes NO freeware because even our freeware includeslinks to Stardocks´ website which in turn sells software and therefore can´t count. "

It´s surprising how people can be misrepresented....

The "guy" simply said that the particular piece if software wouldn´t be included in the skinnables.org app listing, because it isn´t in the "spirit" of freeware according to the site manifest. A simple link to the Stardock site would be fine, but automatically adding 8 or 9 entries (with sub-entries) to the users start menu, all pointing to payware products seems a little overkill, no?

Please note - I am not trying to define what freeware is or should be, as we all have different opinions. Perhaps the skinnables.org definition of freeware is a little extreme, but this is how we like it. As someone once said - start your own site, and then you can make the rules. Good advice Brad :)

pitkon you already have proven that........ here´s one for Elwin

((((((( Confessional )))))))

/Elwin: goes into a confessional box and says, "Bless me father for I have sinned, I have been with a loose woman" The Priest says, Is that you /Elwin: ? /Elwin: says yes Father, it is me. the Priest says "Who was the woman you were with?" /Elwin: says, I cannot tell you, Father...... because I don´t want to ruin her reputation. The Priest asks, was it Brenda O´Malley? /Elwin: replies "No", Father..... The Priest asks, was it Flona MacDonald? /Elwin: replies " No" The Priest asks, was it Ann Brown? /Elwin: says " No" Father. The Priest asks, was it Amy Thomas? /Elwin: replies " No" Father, the Priest asks, was it Cathy Morgan? /Elwin: replies " No Father" I cannot not tell you...... Well the Priest finally says, /Elwin: I admire your perseverance, but you must atone for your sins. your penance will be four "Our Fathers" and five "Hail Mary´s". now go back to your seat. /Elwin: walks back to his pew and his buddy /BruB: slides over and whispers, "What Happened?" Well, I got four Our fathers, five Hail Mary´s and six good leads :-)
I am not into skinning very long. About the time WB 1.xx came along I found Stardock because I was experimenting with LiteStep. I loved the skins that came along with some of the LS themes.

Being in the software industry myself, I struck me how well Stardock was supported. It had very active news groups. Not knowing who was who I reported a WB bug. Some guy, called Neil Banfield, asked me for some details. It was hard to explain so, I wrote a little program to show the bug. To my surprise he was working on WB and the next day a fixed version was available to the users. I wasn´t even registered. Yet I was helped.

I registered ObjectDesktop. Something went wrong and a guy called Kris Kwilas helped me out and I had everything up and running.

ObjectDesktop was my choise because it was cheaper than buying WB, IP and CC seperately. The price did remain the same over the years and even after DX and OB were added the price did not change. I compare that price to other products and to me it is in the area of other shareware. A price level that fits my wallet. BTW: I didn´t go for Chroma because it wasn´t as advanced as WB (although it had a pretty nifty format). Both were in the same price range.

As things go in a community I became involved in the news groups and got to know great people like BuzzHog, Mercury, Morphh, pjpowell, greenreaper, d, Adam (BuilderBinds), scartch, tarkus (he used another name back then), to name a few.

One of those guys (Morphh) wanted to know if it was possible to make remote control for WA on the title bar of a window skinned by WB. I told him that no such plugin was made, but that it could be done. Since nobody wanted to write that plugin, I did it myself and WBAmp was born. WBAmp was easy to make ( I remember that it worked in 2 weeks). Everyone loved the idea. A lot of people helped me testing it.

I remember that Brad loved that plugin and when I wanted to renew my subscription he gave me a free ODNT supscription for two years. I didn´t ask him to, he just did it.

Those active users were united in a private mailing list that allowed one to talk more directly to the dvelopers and helped them with ideas. The first mailing list of that type was called WBBeta. Later on another one was started called DXBeta. Now a days we found out that news groups are easier to deal with and to allow the system to work for other apps too private newsgroups were created. The old public ones were equally important and didn´t loose any of its goals: Support, bug reports and new ideas. Or just having fun.

When DX came arround I did a similar plugin for it called DXPlayer. That one began to lead a life of its own and SD wanted a player of its own. Not a remote thingie, but a real player. I am working on that for a year or so. It is now in Alpha. Because I am busy with my own job things go slower than I wanted. Also, I had some personal problems that didn´t make it any easier. SD started paying me of course for my work I did for the new player (it was not a simpel hobby project anymore), but they never forced me to work any harder then was possible, considering my daytime job.

So, my opinion about Stardock is colored? I guess not. People working there now were once skinners them selves or were active in the skinning community before they were paid. To name a few: Neil, Adam, Ian, Alberto and Jeff all have a similar background. None of them, including Brad, is getting rich and driving BMWs because of it. I don´t even have a car. Well, in Amsterdam (where I live) one is better off with a bike).

There are more interesting parts besides the news groups. I discovered IRC somewhere along the lines. First on EFnet, later on a SD server and of course on CavNet. Again great people were to be found there: likwid, Red1, dreamer, nivenh, shoggot, Viro, Transmutate, Hippy, to name some more.

Any help I wanted was given me. Users helped me with bug reports. Skinners helped me with ideas. SD Developers helped me with pieces of code. Where on earth can you find that. This is software created by all of you involved.

In some of my personal problems I found out that some of those people helped me out as well. I won´t mention any names.

So, there is definityly a community. You can find that comminity on WC, but also on the other sites like this one and the newsgroups and IRC.

Now back to reality: SD is asking money for their software. So what? They need to feed mouths, pay office bills, by development equipment, pay for file, web and e-mail servers, pay for bandwith and pay for the development of future products.

It hurts me when I see some people not willing to speak their mind in this thread and it hurts me because most probably don´t know the stories behind it. It also hurst me that some people are not willing to speak their mind because the company is OK, but is is not l337 enough to admit it. And I am happy to see that some see the perspective of things.

How is that for a colored opinion. ;)
This thread was not a flaming
This thread was not a rant
I find it amazing how people don´t understand the "Title" of a thread...
If people who comment would stick to what the subject is in a "discussion" and not add input that was not ask and read what some one says and not twist what one says to suit their opinion... a thread like this would never get out of hand.........

I object to any one saying this thread was a Flaming against frogboy or Stardock or WC, frogboy himself said plenty here......... the Question was Asked "Why people get angry with Stardock etc" The Question was not asked why People like Stardock/frogboy/WC their is a difference in the question, and does not make SKINBASE flaming any one.................

Now if some one wants to make a Thread on why they like Stardock/frogboy/WC then the discussion would of been just fine, right............? Are we not adult enough to handle both opinions, without puting words into peoples mouth or twisting things. Just my opinion, geeeesh........
BruB: You´re not suggesting that the people of Skinbase are more negative about things than positive are you?

Integer: No, you don´t get to define freeware. I´m pretty satisfied that a reasonable person would consider LogonStudio, for instance, as freeware. When you try to argue that something isn´t in the "spirit" of freeeware because the program installs into its own sub-folder links to other programs (that aren´t free) then I´d say that many people would see that as just grasping at straws.

But I do agree that the best solution for users with strong opinons that they don´t feel are adequately represented by the websites they frequent is to start their own website.

As much as I argue with you, Integer, I do respect you because you aren´t one of those guys who just complains and does nothing. You actually back up your beliefs with constructive action.

I think a lot of the reasons that people dislike Stardock is because they see it as a company trying to commercialise skinning. If they saw Stardock more as a group of like minded people trying to produce skinning programs and constantly listening to customer feedback to improve those products they would maybe have a different point of view. How many other companies are there that you can go on line and chat to the CEO? You can speak directly (over IRC) with the developers of the programs you are using. You get to have some real input into the way the application is going. That is what I feel I have with Stardock. They aren´t just some suppliers of software somewhere out there I never get to really know. I would even venture to say that I would consider many to be my friends. When DesktopX was just released I was testing some stuff and discovered a problem in a plugin which could cause a win9x machine to run out of resources rapidly. I informed stardock and received a T-Shirt and a note of thanks from Brad. That´s the kind of people Stardock are. They are some of the nicest people I know. (Well except for this MadIce character. He´s a bit of a weirdo ;))

Ok. Maybe I´m coming across as a suck up but I just don´t care. I´m not going to sit around while people spread the negativity shutting my mouth and biding my time, I´m going to give my point of view as straight as I can.

Ok.... I tried to kill this thread along with others, but its a shame this discussion, by others had to turn it into a flaming, a discussion that some people did not like the topic, but I´m sure if the topic would have been singing praises it would have stayed on topic....... Speaking for myself, I have never Bashed any product Stardock has, if there was a bug, I mentioned it, if it was a great version runing smooth I said that too........ All in all, some like humiliating any one that says anything "negative" well thats life and some from WC needs to grow up and learn how to take part in a "discussion...... I for one, love the Stardock products and if they ever read when I posted praises would know that....... But I´m disgusted with not being able to have an opinion of my own with out being faulted, so my decision has been coming for some time, since things don´t seem to change in the community and as scarebear has always said "skinning should be fun", so there has been no fun any more in skinning Wblinds for me, not only are the Stardock products out dating my brand new computer that´s only 6 months old, I´m through skinning the Stardock products and moving on to something that does not have this type of aggravation........ The only apology I have, is I´m sorry that it is a reflection here on Skinbase now!

If I disagree with your opinion I´m "flaming" you?

It seems like your view is that only you are entitled to opinions and no one should disagree with you.

I haven´t flamed you. But I disagree with many of your opinions.

Chichi: If you are still talking about the WindowFX Nvidia thing it is a known problem with the NVidia drivers. Stardock has not made your graphics card obsolete. Nvidia have drivers which do not support all they should and the latest WFX actually has an alternative method which allows Nvidia cards to run transitions at a pretty fast rate.

You may want to check it out and enable that option.

oh, i can translate that too:

"i keep using Winstep, LiteStep, HoverDesk and the Microsoft desktop themes until StarDock software will be free and their site (Wincustomize) has sections for all skinnable software and supports multiple languages as English, French and all the other.
if that is possible for LiteStep, StarDock should be able to do the same.
thank you."

Brain4 is probably referring to all the LiteStep community sites in many countries as France, Brazil, Korea, Japan, Germany, to name just a few. maybe the multiple language idea is not that bad, seeing the Mandarin posts in the Wincustomize Message Board ;)
