Just use a normal graphics app (ps, psps, gimp) and a text editor (notepad, metapad). Some apps have skinning programs, but most don´t. C´est la ve.

Alright. I gotcha. Wish I could help dirrectly, but I suck at graphics.

Just look around some tutorial sites. I´ve got a list someplace, but DevArt or spoono.com are good places to start.

When designing a skin, always start on paper. Then do it in graphics. You´re going to have to do a little trial and error with what you can and can´t do with a skin, but you´ll figure it out.

When you have your graphics, and the skin just doesn´t look right or won´t work, then I´ll be able to help you again. 8)

Good Morning :,

Thank you for all your help and suggestions. I do appreciate it a lot, well I can say it the whole time.

Firstly I have to thank you SCAREBEAR, the site with CDBurn is excellent, exactly what I´m looking for. No I just hope that it is usefull.

I´ve looked at your site PK and thank you for the example. I will take you up on your offer to mail you when I get stuck :9

Not to you RED, what I´ve meant with 2D is embossing effects as you know Desiging 3D but on screen and paper appears it only 2D for the eye. So basically I want to design a skin with Metallic and Fluid effect.

Does it make sence? :-D Thanks for the offer to help me.

What SNOWMAN suggested could be a great help!!!!! :9

I wish you all a great day (little bit silly to say when we all know what is going on in the world :-(

Bye bye
B :p

I see gRAVE is advertising his own stuff ;-) Let me do the same here then!

*****START ADVERTORIAL*****

PKTimer (yup, made by me) is very easy to skin (really!). And when you skin it you get a free registration (well,.. heck its free anyway....). The bestest of the bestest (..) thing is that you can email me anytime when you dont know how to skin it, or get in trouble skinning it :-)

Here can you find it:
http://www.x21b.com/pktimer.php

Scarebear made a nice tutorial:
www.twohipdudes.com

My email is also on that page if you need help :-)

***** END OF ADVERTORIAL*****

Bea: What do you mean by 2d effects?

As for which app is the easiest, QN may not win that contest, but it is pretty simple. If we run into too many problems, then we´ll go t something easier. It´s up to you of coarse. If youwant to try another app, I´ll guide you thru it. 8)

Yes - 72 DPI is perfect :)

If an ini file is scary, then you could start with a program like BeatNik or Tyme first. Both let you create your graphics and have built in skin compilers.

BeatNik - http://somedec.com/downloads/
Tyme - http://www.545studios.com/

With Tyme you do still have to edit the ini (which is small and easy) but you can edit them easily from the ´Load Skin´ menu (Which you can access by right-clicking on the program).

If you want to skin a CD player, CDrun is possibly the easiest with a very small ini file (used only to give the skin a description and skin author details) and graphics that simply must be a certain size.

CDrun - http://www.amberror.lt/cdrun/ (the site has a skinning tutorial too :))

At TwoHipDudes - did you try the PDF tutorials as well as the website ones? The PDF tutorials have pictures that should help. It´s important to start small. Don´t try and skin Media Jukebox or AIMutation first. PKTimer, Scribbles and Audiosliders are the easiest to skin. And Audiosliders used to give away free registration of the program to people that skinned it. I don´t know if they still do. PKTimer and Scribbles are free :D

The most important thing you can do when learning to skin (IMHO) is pull apart someone else´s skin and see what they did. Just don´t ever use their graphics :)

But thank you for your help. I am a person that understands graphics but as Java or Html there I am a little bit stupid :grin:

Thank you again.

Bye bye

bea: have look at my quick notes tutorial. Then if you have any questions we can just take it from there.
Tut: http://www.spoono.com/tutorials/skins/quick_notes/#3
QN: http://www.lowdimension.com

As for the html question, it is similare. In fact there are apps that use xml based skinning, so they would be even more similare. That usually isn´t the case though. Lets take quick notes for example. Here is the text file for the skin in my tut:

[Author notes]
Skinname=Spoono Sample
Author=CutTheRedWire
E-Mail=CutTheRedWire@hotmail.com
Website=www.spoono.com
Description=A sample skin for learning purposes.

[Skin Settings]
Left=2
Top=17
Width=196
height=132
Windowcolor=$00000000
Fontname=Arial
FontSize=7
FontColor=$00707070

: Basically everything to the left of the equal sign is a variable, and everything to the right is what you put in to control it. The first part is pretty self explanitory. It´s information you put in about yourself like credits in amovie or what not. The second part is a bit more tecknical. It´s controlling where the text area is on quick notes. If you´ve used the program, you´ll see what I mean. If not, I´ll put it to you this way: you have to tell the app where a person can type on the skin, and this is where you do that. Left & top are where it starts. Width and hight ar how big it is. The colors are in hexadecimal (I think you know what that is, if not I can explain). I think the font entries are self explanitory as well. They control how quick notes displays the fonts in the text area.

Now to really get a feel for what these settings are doing you should play with them in a skin. If you aren´t sure how to go about that, then just divid a number in there by 2, save the file, and reopen the app.

Now this is just one example. A very common thing you will see in other skins is the name of the images you are using. In quick notes they have to be certain ones, so it doesn´t need them. I hope this gives you a lot of specifics you´ve been wondering about.

Again, I´m open to any questions, as are most the ppl here. Heck, 90% of them have already skinned this app before. :P Even if you don´t use the app or the skin, it is a nice simple stepping stone to take. Hope I didn´t get too elimentary, or condesending. Just wanted to give a thurough answer and I got a lil carried away. ^.^;

Morning Scarebear, gRAVE, PK and CutTheRedWire ;)

Thank you for your tips, as I am aware of creating the skin with Photoshop but wat is bothering me is the functional part.

Another question is, do I use Notepad for text simmilar as HTML code? Sorry for the silly questions I am trying to visualize how this skin wil function after I´ve designed the Graphic part.

Please do answer again, your help is being appreciated, if you guys now how long I am sitting on the net trying to find a program...puhh!!

Have a great day!!! 🍺

Bye
B

With the programs listed above you make the graphical part of a skin. Most applications also have a .ini file (simple text file) that you have to edit, use Notepad for that.

If you want to make a simple skin you can also use MS Paint. It comes with windows, and is probably already installed on your system. Its mostly used to create ‘pixelart’, art / skins drawn pixel by pixel by hand :-)
