OP
Its not a optimal solution in my opinion.
That will only make people leave comments for the sake of downloading, not for the sake of the comment.

Commenting on uploads has been an ongoing topic for "ages", and of course its nice to know what people think of your work, but this has also lead to some nasty situations because someone left bad comments, that you´d really would have liked to have been without.....

I rarely leave comments myself, because it can be quite hard coming up with new stuff to say, and Id rather not leave a comment than just saying "nice work".....

Commenting should stay optional - not something you should be forced to do!
On the other hand, why should authors contribute their works if no comments are posted? Don´t tell me it´s just for the sake of numbers. But I agree with snowman, comments should stay optional. Somehow people should be made aware of the added value of comments. Yes snowman, even the "nice work"....may do. It tells me people take trouble to post it however small it may be....My two cents....

maybe a section can be added to the site called "Critic Corner" where ppl can upload their stuff specifically to get advice on how to improve or what direction to take their skin to etc.

I mean for the ones that don´t skin for "themselves" and have that desire to skin only to please everyone else (which is impossible btw, but why not try give them a separate section)

You´ve got some good points crae but still, if one had to send comments through mail there would be even fewer comments given.

lecrayon, just a lill side note: craeonics is not female - that´s at least what he says himself ;)

Yeah I know it says in his profile that he´s female, but that is just yet another ´hickup´ you may find around here.....

Those who want to improve need comments 8O Although...no comments can mean: either it is incredibly bad or it is perfect.... 🍺 Crae is good at darts, she hits bulls eye way too often ❤️ :jack 🍺 :sangria

BRAVO.... Crae.. I have been looking for a way to answer some of the questions that are rasied in this thread... but was having a diplomatic time of it... I´m happy that you read it in a "philosphical mood" :) :) I really must practice that "mood" more often.. lol

Hey craeonics,
I think that you see the comment case from NOT the author point of view, but as an observer :)
Maybe I am wrong, but this is what I have understand with my poor English.
No prob, we all have our point of view, don´t we?

/me ponders

What is the point in having the comments in a centralised environment as this? Why is there a need for comments at all? Is it mere angling for attention? Is it not better to leave your email address in you skin? IN that case only those that truly have something to say will contact you.

Or are comments meant as a means to discuss a skin? If so, the system is flawed in its current form, for one can never keep track of the skins commented upon and be left with a usable site.

/me is in a philosphical mood

Pinchecl me agrees =)
however forcing a comment will most likely not get anyone constructive critisim but rather prob just the opposite "destructive" critisim... anyways this subject comes up alot everywhere atleast it brings attention to the wants of the ppl that upload their stuff right?

Hey Jacob ( Lecrayon ) thank you :)

I agree with your point of view, in some cases a constructive critism is possible, in other cases it is not possible.
I guess that only if an author knows the taste and the motives of the person that it is commenting, then the constructive critism is possible, in the rest of the cases the comment it may be missunderstood, specially when the most of the people are not using well the English language, as me for example ;)

Thanks Shawn ( wstaylor ) :)

I agree with Nikos, I think that a little reminder should come up after the download is comlplete (not a pop-up)... and then the person may look at the download and decide that they would like to comment or not. Good thread Nikos !!!

Hi Nikos, and others.
Comments are important, especially the constructive ones. On Wincustomize I did just that, regardless who it was, just left some people to think about some changes. And that alone got me into a whole lot of personal attacks, and sometimes low ratings too. So I decided I didn´t need that in my life. Over there you can only say wow brilliant well done blahblah, and authors say thank you thank you.
My friends, in life there is always something to learn from each other, that´s what comments should be about. And with you Nikos, sometimes I am in awe what you produce, and can only clap. :9

Please pay attention, this thread it is NOT any more about obligated comments
It was just the begining of an argument about comments.

Hey Yrgal, I agree with your point :)

I somewhat agree Pinch, but then again, if your work normally gets alot of downloads, comments just like "nice work" gets pretty useless....

People will only comment because they have to, not because they want to - and I doubt thats the purpose of the comments!

Yes, you are right Snowman and Doreen.

Maybe, instead of forcing for a comment, a nice reminder about comments should do the work, because people, which are not authors, they don´t know the importance of the comment for the author.

It is just an argument and good opinions maybe will lead us in a better situation than the normal and general one.
We don´t have to take anything as stantard, we may try for the better.

Pinchecl when you upload your work just for the sake of comment "or" downloads you´ll find yourself frustrated in no time and stop uploading your work real quick like, but if you upload your work merely just to "share it" and you get massive downloads "or" comments then that´s when you find it fun...

I think that the comments I get on my works are great,But I don´t do them for the comments I do them for the sake of Art.The comments, the number of downloads are a plus ,But I would still do the Art and continue to upload my work without them !!

Well here is my 2 cents... I have commented on uploads here for a looong looong time... But quit.... Why? Quite frankly.. there is a whole hell of a lot of work that goes in a program skin... and deserve a comment... many of those artist don´t get the recognition that they deserve here at SB I for one did not comment to those program skins and that is my fault... I know better than that and should have recognized that talent... and those that are familiar with my comments know that I am not the average commentator... I do most of my comments on Walls because that is where my interest lies... I comment on what I see... than take into consideration the work that went into the piece... If I see something that is mediocre from a well know artist... I will pass it up... that artist knows why.... When I see walls that are offered by a "newbie" encouragement is expressed in the works submitted..

Either way you want to you look at it ... The wallpaper uploads here have gone downhill... and most do not deserve comment... But as a commentator, I will not sift through the mediocre downloads to find the exception to comment on.... :) :)

This site has changed so much in the past year, that I hardly know it anymore. Not only from an upload standpoint, but the friendly cooperative site it once was... Like I said it´s my 2 cents worth..

hmm, I am always happy when I get a comment, but 80 percent are actually only saying that the wallpaper is nice or a "well done". I still like it that other people are happy with the product of my creativity but if we wouldn´t get comments at all that would be fine with me as well.
But basicly I like the idea of that people should give something first before recieving the requested file :D

I don´t mind at all if a comment is only ´that´s nice´...
I appreciate any positive comment no matter how trivial it may seem to others.
Obviously it isn´t feasible to try and force people to comment; that isn´t the answer, but without positive feedback I think that many people will stop bothering to share their creations with the general public.
"but without positive feedback I think that many people will stop bothering to share their creations with the general public", I agree with ya Jim :)

This is exactly the cause which has make me opened this thread.
Personaly, I am against any forced obligation. So please don´t take me wrong.
( "Forced Obligation" ??? I don´t know if these words are meaning what I am trying to say in English, I hope they do :, ).

I remember before I started skinning, I was browsing and downloading wallpapers from WEB, without any thought to leave any comment, to tell you the truth, I was wondering then, why people are writing comments...

Maybe, instead of obligate comment, a nice reminder about comments should do the work, because people, which are not authors, they don´t know the importance of the comment for the author.

What you think about it?

It´s creating that makes it fun. But, what I need is comments to let my skilling caps grow. I know, it´s not the "nice work" comments that contribute to that. The only thing it probably tells me is that I created something that is liked by some. After all, if you frequently share something which isn´t appreciated there will be an urge to stop sharing (although trying harder may be another reaction....). Anyway, in both situation, appreciated or not, I liked to get feedback or suggestion to try to get a better skining artist.
:)

I think if people were forced to leave comments, you would never get an honest opinion about yuor works, and actually lots more of the "nice" & "cool" comments, and not real appreciation for job well done. I´d rather see one honest opinion, than a bunch of "like-a-lots", for sure, and adni, if everyone should leave a comment before downloading your work, when would you have time to read them? :) The XP Professional windowblind alone has been downloaded 397.797 times from wincustomize alone... lol

Regarding my gender, as the saying goes: "on the internet, no-one knows you´re a dog" (or in this case, a horde of daemon bunnies).

Back on topic: a critic corner may be what a lot of people are looking for. I can recall discussions on DevArt where people stated they uploaded their stuff temporarily just to get feedback. Perhaps gRAVE can add a function where people can mark as their skin as "work in progress", with a listing in the column on the right with the skins that have had the most recent feedback and what not.

Then again, this might be reinventing the wheel.

I am new here and have been posting mostly icons, which I do for the fun of it. I don´t care if no one likes them, I just enjoy doing them and I think the amount of downloads you get is often a good enough measure of the quality of your work. I am personally happy if I get 20 downloads, which most of mine have. 20 People using my icon (for however long) makes the effort seem worthwhile. I do however realise that this is not enough for many people - especially those creating unique and original art for their icons/skins and so I would just like to say the idea of having to make a comment before downloading seems good but I think it would be abused by those who can´t really be bothered and just want to grab that great icon/skin and go. This would waste loads of space with comments like "ok.", "not bad", "crap" and all kinds of junk and worthless remarks which a lot of people will undoubtedly leave. I think a good solution would be to enable the poster to click a radio buttton requesting a critique which would place some kind of graphic highlighting the request in the post when uploading is complete. This will keep everybody happy - those that don´t care if they get comments or not and those who have just done a masterpiece but need some feedback and - more importantly, those just starting out and needing a little encouragement and guidance. I´m gonna shut up now - this post seems long. That´s my idea anyway. Cheers. ps can someone else help me out in the icon section? nobody except myself and weboso has posted here for a long time!
