Thanks Snowman that`s all I need to know.......... for now:)
Almost offtopic:

Although its ok to upload SEA´s to Skinbase (is it?) I must say that I myself (and lots of people with me) will never download (install..) an SEA if I don´t know the person offering it. You never know if the author is legid, or maybe has been inflicted by a virus. A traditional zip or rar also offers more flexibility for the user.

Interesting. I´m actually beta-testing software that will soon allow skinners to create exe versions of their skins so they can be installed. You can create your own startup picture when the installation process starts etc. Skinnable installation file for a skin. Funny :)

Anyhow, do you think it would be accepted? Can you not virus check an exe file properly?
To start at the bottom; Yes I do think it will be accepted; most of the people doing something with skins are using-only now. Users (nothing wrong with it btw) who maybe don´t even know what a zip file is, nor like toying around with them and thus gladly like it when something goes "on-auto" :-) (heck, I also favor that of course)

It sounds like a good idea, although I see lots of problems with viruses when this gets picked up. Quite hard to tell the difference between a valid skin installation for application X and a valid skin installation for application X while also a small trojan is installed ;-)

I don´t know how this apps work, though from what I can read every installation is an exe on itself. If I would design such an app. I would do it a lill bit different; create some kind of main app that the user has to install once and a file association to it; then the skins can be zips (or so, at least something that can be opened and checked by some admin on the sites where it gets submitted or so) with an installation script etc in it; same as the stand alone exe, though much better to check :)

Just tell me if I am paranoid btw ;-)
Oh btw; you cannot properly check an exe file, it can be encrypted etc. And what if an installation deletes c:\windows.. thats no virus, though I doubt it will benifit your windows installation ;-)
I don´t think you´re paranoid at all. Similar concerns I brought up with the developer when I was first told of it. Basically it is just to make things easier for the end user like you pointed out. I´d only install if I knew who made the exe though. Or if I made it myself ;)
That`s what I had in mind when I asked about using SEA`s `coz once I had problems with style xp skin wich was a nest of spyware but it was packed with some instalation program(wise or something),basicly you can see what is inside sea if you are a total commander user and press ctrl+pgdown, there are other ways too but maybe not suited for novice users.I have everything against spyware and viruses and I would never, ever send It to anyone but who can you trust, one can never be to sure ,that`s the naked truth
I asked that question `coz I wondered If you are checking all the uploads for viruses and stuff so If I upload something in self-exract form, people who are taking downloads can be secured
On the other hand PK is right what if an archive is containing let`s say a simple batch file
that can delete some vital parts of the OS
I`ll stick to zip or rar
cheers
