OP
Paxx made a handy ratings calculator some time ago. You might want to check that out (no, I don´t know where it went).

Perhaps you could split ratings into several categories:

[ graphics | photoskin | needs serious work | okay | a few glitches, but good | perfect ]
[ originality | os-port | been there done that | okay | interesting | freshness ]
[ technique | cut´n´paste | come on, is this the best you can do? | okay | skillfull | whoa, how did you do that ]

It would make things a bit less abstract and more concrete, if you get my grip.

I think I´ve flicked it to female here myself.

Anyway, I´ve been waiting for inspiration for well over a year now (if it isn´t more). Or actually, I do have inspiration, but can´t seem to get a clear mental image of what I want to create. Add to that that skiinning is on a low priotiry behind finishing that damned school, draw again and finally making a new site, plus that I don´t really have time for it (all this posting is during work).

So in short: I don´t do anything, because I´m lazy.

I would have not been courious and found this if it wasn´t for your comments at other skin sites, so I got interested in the kind of skins you do to know your taste......... could I ask don´t you skin anything?

Jumping back to the subject. I never pay as much attention to the numbers as to what is said...that´s why those anonymous 10´s drive me crazy...but good, bad, or ugly I´d rather see the words.

I one comment that still stands out in my mind came from Snow ...."One word - Wierd"
I prefer to think that was good wierd. :D

But I don´t know if that helps Grave any? He does need some kind of rating system for the stats...doesn´t he?

How much of the stats are based on the ratings?

That is a great looking system Paxx has there. I think it creates a very fair score based on actual relevant information being provided by the user. The problem with that is I can´t see many people using a form like that. People are flat out giving a score from one list or leaving a comment. they certainly won´t take the time to fill out the form.

I also agree with Paxx´s original comments on the page Doreen provides:

"I do not agree with grades on art or skins".

I´d much prefer something like the 1-5 not good - good range or personal preference. not a rating, but a person´s tastes being represented. Ratings should be left to things like downloads/time online/views etc....

A system like Paxx´s requires you to use the skin and return.....
most folks ´rate´ a skin based on the SS....
So I guess what I´m saying is..............I´ll shutup now.............. :smoke

Good point though Koasati. I recall a skin that looked nothing like it´s screenshot at DeskMod once. The reviews were pretty good and the skin was not, but as people hadn´t actually downloaded the skin, they didn´t know that :)

lol @ BruB and thanx scare....ummm....Yeah I like BruBz suggestion....I love - I like - Ok - ect....very simple and encouraging....and Brub....you might seem more poetic in French but I wouldnt understand you....lol...

p.s. I think deviant art is interesting but they don´t allow you to really achieve success because all artwork is thrown into a big pit of designs that get a screen time of maybe 10 secs if you´re lucky...Their organization sucks...actually their whole site sucks...but I have to be there anyway...I joined every skin site that I could find in the community and I´m testing the system...Ratings and comments are hard to come by...and at skinz.org... they wont post your work unless it´s modified to their standards...thus staff opinion overRules public opinion and I´ve had work rejected because they didn´t like it....I was told to modify it and re submit...screw originality is the impression I got from that....bottom line...there are currently 50 guests and 6 members....which means greedy non productive users...and the people that design for them....and that´s all good cus our visual messages being spread....bugzOut

This is just my opinion, if you come on too strong for even a newbie would have NO encouragement to continue...... I feel most of us are not in school anymore and skinning is suppose to be fun :-) keep it "simple" and ´encouraging" (fair/good/great/excellent) peoples comments can be a defeat alone, "no one" does poor/bad/ugly/suck for trying! ..... we have to remember ages in skinning have had a range of 9yr to 60yrs old :-) and I think were all smart enough to see the quilty in our own work and we strive all the time to get better :-)

chichigirl46 has a very good point! I agree with her :)

My opinion is :

[1] Good try
[2] Great
[3] Excellent

Any way, I don´t like rattings, unless they are a sum of at least 5-10 votes, if there are not, it is better not appearing at all, because there are many kind of tastes and aesthetics, if you know what I mean.
I agree with adni18 in that one person´s opinion does not equal a rating that is fair. We´ve seen how one person can target an upload like chichigirl went through here.

I don´t like ratings that have words associated as I never agree with them :) I can´t narrow my emotional range down to 3 or 5 options ;)

Hmmmm....
Now that I´ve settled in to the Base as my home, I´ve found that I rairly give a numeric rating to any piece here. To me it could either seem discouraging for someone to NOT get a 100, or it could seem to be "brown-nosing" to give one.
And I NEVER cared for the way Devart´s rating system worked. An excellent skin in my book doesn´t necessarily have to be "original" to be good. I always have to bite my tongue when I see someone get an "A+++" for a port of an OS... Silly, eh? What´s original about a port?
{:p
And of course, being the idiot that I am, my comments usually consist of either "I like it", or "it could use...". Other than that, I usually reserve comment of something I don´t care for. I don´t want to discourage a new skinner, and I don´t want to offend an established skinner just because "in my opinion" they missed the mark on that one. They may well have the next Featured Skin. Just not on that one.
:)

I rarely ´rate´ either. Comments I´ll give if I like something. Otherwise I´ll generally leave it alone. It might not be to my liking, but that doesn´t mean it´s no good.

I mean, I´ve thought some of my skins were ok ;)

Personally I like the system the way it is...a little confusing because I don´t understand how the rating works...but I actually sat here last night and wrote down my standings in the statistical categories...from it I gathered that I´m one of the least downloaded and often forgoten artists here...anyway that helped me set my standards for goals I´d like to achieve...

I must admit though that I very rarely comment others because of my own ego and a desire to be the best...but I do a lot of viewing for research to see what´s new and inspirational and if I have the time I give credit where credit is due...."in my opinion" ...but instead of a skin rating I´d like to see and overall artist rating, let the stats speak for themselves...very few people ever get more than 1 skin rating which means it´s only 1 persons opinion....ahhh...who am I to judge...from what I´ve experienced so far....the what´s cool range is very broad....bugzOut

We´re full of stats :)

http://www.skinbase.org/userstats.php3 - This shows TRUE stats. It compares number of uploads, with number of downloads and time onsite to give popularity and rating info. Interesting.

http://www.skinbase.org/rating.php3 - shows Skinbase member activity. This has nothing to do with skin ratings, but shows who the most active members of Skinbase are. Sad.... ;)

And as for your stats bugzlitey, your doing ok as far as I can see ;)

Bugz your are not unknowed, we can´t pronounce your name :)

Seriously. I loe giving my 2 cents on any work. I try to comment as much as possible the work of others. If I like it I say so, If I don´t I say so. But nothing sucks and nothing is perfect. It´s all a question of opinion. When I started in skinning the only site I knew was DeviantArt (sorry!) and people there where cruel. Comment like "it´s stupid" or "it sucks" really got me offended. It was work I was proud of. But after I learned their ways I noticed what they liked and really did not care. So I still upload there just to have an extra space to upload. But site like Skinbase and LOS really helped me. Snow is one of the people that commented my work and helped me go forward in this art. The point i´m trying to make is. Whatever the way it goes in the ratings I´ll always look at them then look who it comes from. A rating of 100 is maybe high I would actually go with...
-I love
-I like
-OK
-Not my type
-You can do better.

So nothing is discouraging for the artist. and after typing all of this in english, excuse my language. It would of sound so much poetic in french!
I don´t use the rating, coz I have nothing to base a rating on, other than my taste. I don´t pay much attention to them either. I would rather have a comment than a rating. :)
Snow was one of the guys that always commented on my early works too. :)

I too am a member at every skin site (that I´m aware of anyhow). I love each site for what it offers. There is nothing wrong with deviantART. A lot of what people complain about when talking about deviantART is actually a few select members. They don´t represent the site ;)

As for moderation, skinz does it and LOS does on wallpapers (or did - sorry if that is different now) and that´s fair enough. Their sites, their rules. It can get annoying to go through some sections on sites to see repetitive work.

But I can understand what bugzlitey is talking about when you are told you should change something in your work. If you are asking for advice fair enough, but if you were happy and achieved what you wanted, then that could be discouraging.

One of the coolest systems I´ve seen anywhere is the new DeskMod system. I never liked the rating system there, but I think now you have the option when you upload to not allow comments/ratings on your skins. Great idea!
