I´m tired so excuse me if I missed the point here :)

ART:

1. The products of human creativity; works of art collectively
2. The creation of beautiful or significant things

(WordWeb Thesaurus/Dictionary)

So all creations here are ART. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder so all uploads here have to work for #2 above (to at least the creator I´d hope).

So I accept it all now :) Digital art is most certainly a valid form of art.
To answer your original question:
Why am I here?

Well, at first I thought of giving you one of my usual flippant, village idiot answers, but instead, just a straight one for a change.
:)

When I first came to Skinbase, I had just about given up on the whole skinning scene.
I was really tired.

I was tired of the mean spirited superiority of some of the most vocal members of the so called community.

I was tired of being constantly compared and "weighed in the balance" based on how I measured up to other skinners, and other styles of skinning. I wasn´t allowed to skin based on what I had in my head. My ideas - my performance - was judged based on whatever the popular style of the day happened to be. Not on whether my work was enjoyable to ME, and appreciated by even a few.

I was tired of seeing this same attitude of belittlement parceled out to some honest attempts at free expression.

I was tired of the clannishness of some - excluding individuals that didn´t curry favor with the powers that be. Especially those new to the art form.

When I first came here, I was apprehensive, at best.
But after observing the behavior of the admins and senior members here, I recognized an attitude that seemed to be almost infectious. One of mutual respect, tolerance and most importantly, forgiveness.

People here seemed to be truly concerned that no ones feeling were unduly hurt.
The newbie was welcomed and nurtured.
If you didn´t speak the "King´s English" - who cares? Somebody was always there to try to interpret of there was a problem.
Lot´s of good natured ribbing was going on, but nothing truly CRUEL.
Your skins didn´t have to be a "knock-off" of the "Elite" in order to be noticed, or appreciated.
And even when these unwritten rules of etiquette were broken, there seemed to be a true spirit of "forgive and forget".
And the people that come and decide to stay, tend to take on these same values.

OK, maybe I´m looking at the site through rose colored glasses, but Skinbase seems to have this unique quality that the other skin sites don´t have. Not that the others are bad - some have unique qualities of there own.
But Skinbase has a HEART that others lack.

{:p
I Love Getting DEEP ..
We have some very important MENTORS already commenting. Intelligent replies. brub and Elwins are well thought out and Scarebear is ONE of my MENTORS ( in my own way) A "Q" like this makes ya think .. I dont believe Webster has "YA" in there, ( SED PHRASE) But YA couldn´t find Photography at any (so-called) art museum way back when. When art was defined in a book, what did they consider DALI? Get a comment in here WE all Want to KNOW the meaning of life???
I´m really not sure what Sed´s point is..............but I understand where Elwin is coming from. I tend to agree. :) /me
I am here cause I miss you guys.. although I haven´t got time to make a long post, I am touched by the enthusiasm of Sed, brub and even brain4 (Ray). PixelPrintz like skinbase is firstly commited to the people behind the artworks and thats why our relationship with skinbase so far has been very enjoyable.. Thanks for your support BTW.

Some great news, we´ve had deaddreamer (misery) join our ranks, and we now have an Art Director position taken up by Thisign (from iCE group) as well as assistant Art Director in w00zy fron deviantArt Mag. There are still few things I am not happy with and am waiting on gRAVE to fix, but he is a busy man.

anyhow.. Sed is ma man, RESPECT!
:-)
OMG what mushy guys! lemme go grab a tissue... hehe
okay well I´m here cuz my bros are here =)

I don´t make too many skins these days cuz of time restraints and which few I do make are soley for my pocket pc unit, so I´m more of a taker now then a giver...
but I´m actually doing the community a service cuz my skins are really pitiful looking =)

And when I look at ppl´s Art I can sometimes even see through to the person who made it, cuz it always seems to show something about that person´s style or attitude, I never get tired of looking at it, I always enjoy it, and I dunno when it began or when it will end...
but I sure hope grim gets that icon back in the shop soon...
sed´s post here reminds me of a movie I just started watching actually. ´Dirty Pictures´ with James Woods. Photography that was NOT considered art at all.

Photography is most definately an art too. I´ve tried many a time to get it right ;)
I´ll be honest, I´m trying very hard to see the keyboard, I´m ankle deep in tears.... actually Elwin said whats in my heart, for the past few years I can´t even listen to music with out crying, soooooo I´ll come back and try this again later.....excuse me~
