Personally, I just make the skin look awesome for ea. app. Ea. skin is not always exactly like the other, and it´s way better when all the skins are awesome than to have a few awkward ones that are identical. Like I don´t put buttons on BeatNik skins, or the title ´BeatNik´ for example. Things get resized and reshaped to make the skin _useable_--that´s an important thing to me--can I use it and is it easy/efficient to use.
You should keep some elements of your skins the same for it to be recognised as a suite. Like you said, colour scheme is important. But if you´re skinning applications that use buttons, try and make them all the same style/colour etc...

I think the Heavy Equipment and Formula One community skin suites are great examples. They all started as a WindowBlinds skin (if I recall correctly) and each skin used the same elements in their design. Edited and manipulated differently by different skinners, but in the end recognisable as a suite.

My 5c worth (we don´t have 1c or 2c here anymore;))
Thankyou guys for the insite... and I lack common (c).... :)
