My favorite is PureLS
http://www.purels.net/
But not for the newbie

Litestep - accept no substitutes....
:)
There´s a great new distro that´s pretty handy for beginners called LitestepGL.
http://www.graphic-language.net/

But don´t burn any bridges until you grab a good shell switcher.
That way you can switch back and forth between Exploder and LS.
My favorite is Shellon:
http://www.dx13.co.uk/dx/shellon.htm
Oh, don´t get me wrong - I like Talisman. Enough so that I bought it - and I´m using the T2 b4 beta as we speak. Seems to be running great...
:)
But when you figure that Litestep has over 200 plugin modules at it´s disposal, that´s really hard to beat. For instance, I´m not using the default desktop module, or the default popup mod either, because I found other replacement mods that worked better on my particular system. And instead of the usual Winamp plugin (´Geekamp´) I´m using a module that controls Coolplayer, instead. Since I don´t really need the wharf module, I don´t use it, and there by free up that much more resources.

But back to Talisman.
It has some knock down beautiful themes out there!
(Bob Starck-Higgins is a Talisman god!)
:)
And Howie, you are right - you can keep running it.
But Arkadiy, the author has put countless hours into developing it, (and many more in tech support), and he deserves to be paid for his work if you decide to use it beyond the trial period. I think that the price is more than fair...

Here is what I think may be the most comprehensive list of shells I´ve ever seen. It should tell you which ones are in active development or dead, and whether they´re shareware or freeware.

http://list.shellfront.org/list.htm

ls is still to unstable for me. was running it last night and guess what happened, was just chatting on irc and bam crash. so back to talisman as my shell of choice. talisman 2 has come from far and few into the new shell it is now. its more like ls which i like but still has the easy and use of talisman which makes it a great shell for anyone

No problem - need any help, give a yell.

And speaking of free, I can´t help but mention that even though I own licences to almost every skinnable app on the planet, the freebies have become my apps of choice. (LS, eFX, and the rest)
On the other hand my system runs faster, uses less resources, is more stable, and still manages to get the ´oohs and aahs´ from friends and co-workers.
Go figure...
:)

Oh, and just in case, here´s a couple of links to get you started:

The Litestep FAQ:
http://www.wam.umd.edu/~razambon/LSFAQ/

The Docs for the newest Build:
http://docs.litestep.com/

"What I Wished I´d Known About LiteStep":
http://wiwikals.litestep.com/

"If you see a Stepper, chances are he´s wearing a T-shirt that says ´RTFM´..."
:)
