OP
Brub, i´ve said it before and I´ll keep saying it till my dieing day: Clean install is the best/only option. Sure, an update is OK and will still work, but you got yourself a machine with a lot of shit and leftover crap from the previous install!!
But if that´s you only option there should be no problem in doing it. You´ll prolly have to install all your proggies all over again anyways and new/updated drivers. You won´t loose any data (as far as I know) but if you can backup any vital stuff just to be on the safe side. You are dealing with a computer you know.... ;) but then again pewters are one of the dumbest inventiones ever you know... they only do what they are told to do.. ;) ;)

Anyways, do what you have to do but do a clean install if you wanna "stay out of trouble"

:snow

Too much stuff in the PC to do a clean install. But I will do a real clean up of the machine before I start.

BruB, do a backup and clean install. Upgrades never work well, and I have tried it many times for people, and they all end up needing me to reformat the entire thing and start over... :P

Sometimes removing all that ´stuff´ is a good idea and installing fresh. ;)

Just to keep me from falling asleep I´ll just keep on ranting here....
The way I keep my system "reinstallable" is to keep all my installed proggies on one partition/HD and all my other stuff on other partitions/HDs, installations for diff progs like Windows, backups of misc documents. This have saved my butt quite a few times!!
But you might have a problem if you only got one partition/HD... but there´s a solution to a problem like this: Partition Magic (http://www.powerquest.com)!!
It let´s you create/remove/modify partitions "on the fly", even with Windows installed and without loosing any data what so ever. (I´ve tried it, works like a charm)

Another way of doing it could be to borrow an HD from one of you mates (if you got any ;) ) and slam it in your box and use this as a backup disk while you format/fdisk your own HD!!

or you could use a hell of alot of diskettes ;) ;) LOL

I have to agree on the clean install. I upgraded from W2k to XP. It worked, but I ended up doing the reformat dance anyway. (I had a bug that I couldn´t get rid of.)
After the new install, I found that by upgrading, and saving my settings, a lot of XP had been turned off. So bite the bullet and reformat. :D

8 partitions?! dang... I "only" got 4... 3 drives, one split into 2 partitions (45 gig in all) but will have to add another drive since I´m running out of space soon :/

I have 4 too, 3 on the master, 1 on the slave... But you should only really need 2 (unless you are like me and need to actually separate things with different drives cause I´m so disorganized...) :)

I don´t have any particians on my computer........ but I do have them in my closet, several particians two for /hobnobber: and the rest for /me but I don´t think that would help you /BruB: I agree with the rest here, clean install and if you don´t back up your stuff your not wanting to loose here for the up-grade....... think of it this way, if you got hacked or a major virus, your going to loose it all anyway .
