OP
Hmm.... dunno what else we can do to make visitors aware of who is online, than we already do.
Just below the chat it is clearly stated how many members are logged in (able to use the chat)
Again, just below that text is an icon (two people). Clicking that icon gives you a list of those that are logged in.

Also in the ´popup chat´ there´s a list of who is logged in.

Time stamp with msgs.

Active users in list.

Unique list in box bassed on recent shouts rather than page loads + "I´im still here" and "keep me shouting" buttons.

Those are my ideas. >:}

SteV: thats what the msgboard/forum is for ;)

Red:
Time stamp with msgs
Hold the cursor over a nick in the chat for a sec or two and a small popup will show at what time the post was made.

OK the time is shown as ´GMT +1´....
maybe as an extra ´service´ this time could either be:

1.: X amount of hours/min since the post was made
2.: show the local time the post was made, accourding to the timezone/country selected in your profile.

Active users in list
See my first post

Keep the ideas coming! :)

Timestamps should be in the "X minutes/hours ago" format. GMT means nothing to them yanks. Especially when there nothing to compare that time to.

Also, always display how long ago the last chat post was made. THat way people will have to be blind not to see no-one´s around.

Plus what Red said ofcourse.

I remember 2 years ago, I was very experienced Mac user, but a beginner with Windows, I was having problem, which has make me crazy.
What was the problem?
I couldn´t find how I could move the task bar in the right or left or top side of my desktop!!!!
Can you imagine that!!!
I was a kind of guru with Macs then.
The local Apple was always calling me to solve some of their problems!
And suddenly I found my self with this ridiculous problem!

Everyday, some people with no experience at all, are visiting SkinBase , we have to make their visit easier, I believe in simple and clear solutions!

Your thoughts about it are very precious! :)
We love to hear your opinions!

Let´s make this site better for everyone!:)

Change the site in such a way so it´s interesting for members to stay longer so they get answers from other members on their chatposts

What? You can move some Mac´s Adni?
I need a Mac .. ehe

Let me just make a destinction here, chat box is not live, Irc _is_
I think we need to promote greater use of instant messaging.

On skinbase, we have:
Private Messaging
ShoutBox
Forum
User Email Adresses
and... #skinbase Irc Link

There is enough code here to feed the bus load of orphans.

You are right grimspoon about all that you have mention, but the fact is that our vitrine (show window), aka the chat, looks most of the times not alive and this gives a bad impression to most visitors and members too. For my opinion it is a minus for SB.

You are right SteV!

There is a very good new F.A.Q. now, made by nikuki and it is very helpful for the new members.

The rest that you said are very important!

I just only stated the idea but it is nothing as long as I don´t give ideas to work that out.

You see most of the times the people who visit chatboxes are:
-new members who stay online for little time
-older members who stay online for longer time

The problem isn´t the older members, the problem is the new and the unactive members. First of all you need to activate new members and this you could do by more options. There has to be a better help section. Maybe a large guide on how to skin this, how to skin that. If you should add a lot information on how to begin with the skinning the site would be a lot more intersting for the new members.

New members also love to see famous members online. And most of the times you don´t see these in chatboxes or on forum posts. I think you can change this is a bit with comments. My experiences learn me that sites with or good comments or more comments are more interesting for me to visit. Actually sites with members who give me large comments say what they like or don´t like and also teach you a bit. Those comments are apprceaited by ´famous´ and also new members. Most of the times it´s up to these comments which site I choose. And on a site you like you go hang round a little more. And that´s the moment the community feeling comes. And this will make members more active and interested. I think lots of times the power of a comment is underestimated. You have to bring that back!

I know that there is an option "Whois Online", but I saw in Deviantart a red (not online) and a green (online) light next to user, I think that it could be a good idea, to have those lights next to the user name in chat, it is a good option, I don´t know though, if it is easy and not a lot of work for our script Guru gRAVE.
