Vectorwise there´s Illustrator and Freehand. Can´t stand Illustrator, that app is a total pain to use. Printwise you´d probably end up witha DTP-app like Quark. But DTP apps are not meant to draw with, just to do layout, so you need all your artwork done beforehand.

Dorel Draw? no never heard of it, what is it? :)

hey craeonics, dtp apps sounds interesting, because I only need a stable, handy and easy layout program. I do my graphics with photoshop exept special writing effects.
do you know about Freehand? I´d try it out but wasnt very satisfied... but it was some time ago..

Never tried it. But since it´s a MacroMedia app, it´s bound to have a disastrous interface like Flash and Fireworks have.

Another DTP app is Adobe InDesign. And there are more, but you´ll have to poke around for them. Quark is the biggest player.

Note that these programs are quit expensive,. (I think QuarkXPress6 is about 1000dollar/euro or so, InDesign is about the same, or a little bit less expensive..),.

If it is only for "a Newsletter and some Brochures" then maybe you can find a cheaper alternative that maybe more suits your needs (be sure it has good export options though if you want to have it print). I cannot think of a good alternative at the moment btw, sorry :-)

Btw: If you have to choose between those 2 apps then go for the adobe app, its totally integrated in the other adobe apps, and works really great, version 3 will totally crush Quark i think :) (I must say that I dont actually use the two apps myself that much (i dont own them, no need for it), but i do help some people that use them everyday to configure it etc.)

:-)

I´m also making some magazine and I use Adobe InDesign and it´s perfect tool for DTP.

for smaller print jobs Freehand is a good alternative and not as expensive as true DTP programs. not sure why Illustrator should be a pain to use though. i found it pretty intuitive when you´re familiar with Photoshop.

Oh, yess Macromedia app´s are very ... disgusting... - me dont like that.

hehe PK ;) yess I know, they are very expensive, but I need it for company, so I dont have to buy it personally *grin*
(But I think I would try the full version first out before I´d buy it of course ^^ ;))

ok - I have to try InDesign out...
1. its from adobe
2. sounds very handy
3. its from adobe again ;)

Once you know Photoshop, I think you can get round other adobe programs pretty fast.. at least i hops so.

thanx for the informations!

moshi: Try messing around with "envelopes", or whatever they are called in Illustrator (clipping paths, I think). This app is shear hell.

<quote>DOES anyone know a good alternative for corel draw?</quote>

You could always have a look at Serif Page Plus. I used to use it to make brochures and flyers ~ not a bad program.

http://www.serif.com/
