In a landmark moment for Silicon Valley, legendary technologist John Warnock retired from Adobe Systems on Thursday.

Warnock, Adobe´s co-founder, was CEO until December, when he took on a more removed role as chief technology officer. That position will not be filled. Warnock now says he might have been reluctant to retire all at once, but now he is ready.

``I liked it just fine, but to do it right it´s a full-time job and I just don´t want a full-time job right now,´´ Warnock said. ``I think a lot of the insights you gain from the business come from direct contact. In the last quarter I was involved primarily via e-mail, and there´s just not the same gestalt about the business.´´

In Greek mythology, Prometheus brought fire from the gods and gave it to humankind. When John Warnock and Chuck Geschke founded Adobe they did something similar, bringing the power of publishing to anyone with a computer. Others have described the pair as modern day Gutenbergs whose entrepreneurship transformed the PC from a calculating machine to an artistic platform.

Warnock, 60, will continue to serve as a chairman of Adobe´s board beside Geschke, who retired as Adobe´s president a year ago.

``One of the most important applications of computing is desktop publishing, which has nothing to do with the origins of the computer,´´ said Bob Taylor, a scientist who has known Warnock since graduate school. ``The computer was created as an arithmetic engine. To enable anyone who has the wherewithal to be their own publisher -- it´s an enormous breakthrough.´´
