Symmetricom Inc. (Nasdaq: SYMM ), a leading provider of network enhancement solutions for converged voice, data and video networks, is sponsoring the next meeting of T1E1.4, the committee within the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) responsible for digital subscriber line (DSL) standards

Held on Oct. 2 - 4 in Napa Valley, the meeting will be centered on spectrum management issues, focusing on issues regarding the co-existence of different DSL services - including asymmetric DSL (ADSL), symmetric DSL (SDSL), ISDN DSL (IDSL) and High bit-rate DSL (HDSL) - within the same cables.

The committee will also focus on the development of standards that address techniques such as repeaters and remote terminals that help span the broadband divide and enable "DSL Everywhere´´. Symmetricom is working with the committee to promote a standard for ADSL repeaters and to develop guidelines for ADSL repeater deployment that are consistent with the spectrum management guidelines currently under review by the committee.

Repeater technology - which doubles ADSL service distances to as much as 30,000 feet - is one of the key techniques used to enable "DSL Everywhere´´. Symmetricom´s leading repeater solution, its GoLong™ loop extender product, enables DSL service providers to effectively double the distance to which they can offer their service allowing - for the first time - universal DSL service. Announced earlier this year, Symmetricom´s cutting-edge GoLong product is designed to help incumbent local exchange carriers (ILECs) in cooperation with competitive local exchange carriers (CLECs) and Internet service providers (ISPs) to offer DSL services to everyone. GoLong products have completed proof of concept testing and will be evaluated in independent labs within the next few months. It is expected that field trials will commence with selected ILECs by the end of the year.

"ATIS plays a critical role in ensuring the coexistence and interoperability of central office and customer-located DSL equipment, which in turn helps to ensure free and open competition and innovation among industry members,´´ said Amy Vea, marketing communications manager. "Symmetricom is honored to have been asked to lend its expertise to this standards body to help drive the development of new and exciting DSL industry innovations.´´

ATIS and T1E1.4 are leading the way in developing standards for DSL technology. Symmetricom has participated in several different T1 industry committees, including T1X1 - Digital Hierarchy & Synchronization; T1P1 - Wireless/Mobile Services and Systems; and T1E1 - Interfaces, Power & Protection for Networks.

About ATIS Working Group T1E1.4

Working Group T1E1.4 develops standards and technical reports for systems and associated interfaces and for high-speed bi-directional digital transport via metallic facilities. The work of this group focuses on the physical layer transceiver functionality typically involving advanced digital transmission techniques. The Working Group makes recommendations to T1E1 on related matters before U.S. and international standards organizations. The scope of work undertaken by the Digital Subscriber Line Transmission Working Group includes the development of standards and technical reports for transmission techniques, user interfaces, and interface functionality for transmission services providing access to telecommunications networks. It also includes the development of recommendations to T1E1 on related subjects before other U.S. and international forums.
