Hooking up a Network

Besides, I see no MAC-number when I type ipconfig, just the usual ip-numbers. <BR> <BR>Anyhow, Chichi, the trick to getting an answer (other than applying brute force) is to ask the right questions and provide the right context. Like: <BR> <BR><b>context</b> <BR>1. what&acute;s your current setup? Do you already have a network? <BR>2. have you already hooked up the router to the machine(s)? <BR> <BR><b>questions</b> <BR>3. what exactly are you trying to do? Are you trying to install the router, or are you tryibng to actually connect to the net through it? <BR> <BR>Recently installled a network myself and it took me three bloody days to get things running right.

/me cuts off end of TV plug and plastered all wall outlets in both bathrooms and crazy glued the plunger in the toilet LOL Cover yourselfs with plastic cause the shit is going to hit the fan....... its not plugged in yet :-(

Move the tv into the toilet, take some food with you and you can last all football season, hob.

hmm... just make sure that you got the IPX protocol installed on both PCs (control panel -> network (network connections on XP) -> install -> protocol -> Microsoft -> IPX) and that you network workgroups (I think) are the same. <BR>dang let&acute;s see if I can remember how to check that: <BR>On XP it&acute;s something like this : control panel -> system -> computer name -> change (if they are not the same) <BR>On 98 I think it done through the network properties in the control panel, not sure though I haven&acute;t used Win98 for quite some time now.... <BR> <BR>Lotsa tech-mumbo-jumbo but I hope you figure it out somehow :) :)

Duh... winipcfg.exe I meant, but only 98 seems to have it.

Routers equal headaches... searching google with brand name and version number could get you some forum links with easy explanations. In general, it&acute;s easy, but there&acute;s a couple of things that might make it difficult. <BR> <BR>Is the thing supposed to act as hub/switch too, does it have that inside according to the box. If so, you should be able to just plug in the cables from both ethernet cards and the modem cable. Usually, you can access the router settings using your browser, connecting to the internal IP number the router has, settings are a bunch of webpages. <BR> <BR>Does your broadband provider allow multiple computers connected ? Some don&acute;t and check the Mac number of the ethernet card (found by opening a run box, enter &acute;ipconfig&acute;). It&acute;s usually possible to let the router fool the provider; it does send out the original Mac number to the provider, but has to be set to do so. Heh, I&acute;ll shut up, making it more complicated...
